This course is aimed at non-statisticians who work on tobacco regulations (product application review and standard development) and tobacco research to provide a greater understanding of the statistical principles and methodologies used in tobacco research and product applications.  In addition, attendees will gain the information and skills necessary to understand statistical concepts, findings and interpretations as applied to tobacco research and regulation. Participants will learn to confidently convey the information to others in a multidisciplinary team including statisticians.

·       Recognize how and when to use various statistical methods and tests in tobacco research and regulation

·       Improve reading of study design presentations, conclusions based on statistical analysis in product applications   and data summaries

·       Distinguish different types of designs and methods applied to different conditions and settings

·       Interpret results from different types of statistical tests, regression, survey analysis and population modeling properly.

·       Recognize when to use hypothesis tests for differences vs. equivalence and when not to use hypothesis tests

·       Identify when and how to consult with a statistician
